The Martha's Vineyard estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Red Gate Farm is a serene and private 340-acre sanctuary with over a mile of Atlantic Ocean beachfront and two freshwater ponds that has been cherished and preserved for 40 years.
Mrs. Onassis purchased Red Gate Farm in 1979 as a summer home and refuge from the world stage, and as a legacy for her children and grandchildren. The Aquinnah landholding had just one structure back then: a small hunting cabin. Her dear friend Rachel "Bunny" Mellon designed the estate's landscapes. A noted horticulturist and landscape designer, Bunny Mellon, had redesigned the White House Rose Garden when Mrs. Onassis was First Lady of the United States.
Renowned architect Hugh Newell Jacobson designed the elegant Cape Cod styled main house and two-story guest house, which were completed in 1981. Her daughter Caroline Kennedy has continued the legacy of Red Gate Farm. In 2000, she commissioned Deborah Berke, dean of the Yale School of Architecture, to renovate and expand the main residence, retaining its understated, timeless elegance.
The 6,456 sq ft. cedar-shingled main residence was created for entertaining, for gatherings grand or intimate. Nearly all the rooms overlook the Atlantic Ocean, as do the two decks. The main level is appointed with a formal sitting room with fireplace, drawing room, living room, family room, library, dining room and a chef's kitchen equipped with professional-grade appliances. Upstairs are 4 large en suite bedrooms, including a luxurious master suite. A lower-level bedroom, den, 2 office/art studios, 2 powder rooms, 3 fireplaces, laundry room and basement are further highlights.
The 2-story shingle styled guest house is part of Jacobson's original design and offers 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, a living room, kitchen and laundry room.
The 340-acre estate has more than a mile of private Atlantic Ocean beachfront with dunes, 2 freshwater ponds, as well as a vegetable garden and blueberry patch, outdoor pool, tennis court, a fairy tree house, which Mrs. Onassis built for her grandchildren and original hunting cabin. The ancillary structures includes caretaker's house, barn, 2 garages, storage building and boathouse.
This is a legacy estate in the truest sense; Red Gate Farm's provenance is without rival as is its environmental value: a place where the natural world can be treasured and conserved.
